Solidarity in Action

The Jewish Socialists’ Group made its own contribution to the Week of Action organised through the Solidarity Knows No Borders network, with a protest outside the Daily Mail.

Solidarity in Action

The protest highlighted the Mail's appalling history of anti-migrant and anti-refugee vitriol against Jews in the 1900s and 1930s, their open support for fascism in the 1930s, and their anti-Muslim and racist propaganda against migrants and refugees today. Protesters held placards, gave out leaflets, and passers-by stopped to hear speeches from Dave Landau, David Rosenberg and Rabbi Herschel Gluck.

Solidarity Knows No Borders called the week of action this year as it is the 10th anniversary of former Conservative Home Secretary (and later Prime Minister), Teresa May, proudly proclaiming a “Hostile Environment” against “illegal” immigrants. In those 10 years the situation of a much wider population of migrants here, and those seeking asylum in Britain, has worsened considerably, and has been further exacerbated by the draconian provisions in the recent Nationalities and Borders Act. Newspapers such as the Daily Mail have worked hand-in-glove with the current right-wing Government to stir up popular feeling against migrants and refugees.

Demonstrate tomorrow!

The JSG and other progressive Jewish groups are joining the Migrants Justice/Anti-Racism bloc on the TUC’s cost of living march tomorrow that moves off from Portland Place at 12 noon. We are meeting from 11.30-11.45am outside Caffé Nero, 273 Regent Street W1B 2EZ (corner of Great Castle Street), and will then join the Migrants Justice/Anti-Racism bloc as a group.
